The chateau lies in the center of the Poitou, a culturally rich but largely undiscovered region of west-central France that abounds in history, good food and clean air.

Its capital, the ancient city of Poitiers, with its citadel of winding medieval streets, is most famous for its Romanesque churches, especially Notre Dame la Grande, its university where Joan of Arc was once interrogated, and its nougat, one of France’s confectionery delicacies.

The storied towns and chateaux of the Loire Valley lie within an hour’s drive to the North and the beaches and islands of the Atlantic coastline, a little further to the West.

St. Julien L’ars

Just beyond the Chateau gate lies the sleepy country village of St. Julien l’Ars that supplies the Chateau with the daily necessities: fresh baked baguettes, pastries and the local news. The area beyond the village invites walking, bicycling and leisurely car touring with endless winding back roads, charming villages and chateaux.

Local Region

The nearby towns of Chauvigny, St. Savin, Angles sur l’Anglin, as well as Poitiers have regular outdoor flea markets, antique sales and luscious produce markets. The area rewards exploration with unexpected opportunities for sightseeing, shopping and dining in the small towns and villages of this lovely agricultural region. Golf, horseback riding and kayaking are available within a 15 minute drive, as is Futuroscope, France’s high-tech exhibition center.

Further Afield

The jewels of the Loire Valley, Chinon, Saumur, Fontevraud, Villandry, Amboise, Chenonceaux, along with the Loire vineyards can be reached on easy day trips as can Ile de Re and other Atlantic beaches near the historic port city of La Rochelle.
