The Chateau St. Julien l’Ars Art Experience will combine the energy
of Paris and the inspirational setting of the Chateau to ignite your
creativity.
The Chateau is only an hour and a half train ride southwest of
Paris. It is removed from the advertised tourist sites and therefore
offers a unique place to work creatively in a serene setting. The
Chateau estate is conducive to reflection and offers the opportunity to
walk ancient pathways (14th
century) overflowing with history, which no doubt will have a profound
effect on your creative pursuits. There are studios to accommodate your
needs with painting tables and the appropriate equipment and tools
necessary for your creative endeavors. All rooms at the Chateau have
been updated for your comfort while retaining the architectural details
of its long history and its remarkable ambience.
Instructor Biography:
Michele Wipplinger, a textile artist and designer, will lead
the workshop. Michele’s studio in Seattle, Washington is the home of
Earthues, a natural dye company. Michele has worked with plant dyes and
textile processes for over 28 years. The ancient eroding walls of SE
Asia inspire her current work. Her work strives to transform simple
cloth into ancient patterns with cryptic marks and gilded edges.
Michele also spends four months annually consulting for various
not-for-profit organizations designing cloth for the western market.

Beth Dunn will, unfortunately, be unable to join us for this
first Chateau experience. None-the-less, to meet your creative needs
the workshop will include such specialty techniques as photo transfer
on cloth.
Workshop Description:
During this week-long workshop participants will learn skills that
can be applied to the art of cloth whether in clothing, wall pieces or
paper. The focus will be primarily on cloth, although watercolor
painting with plant dyes on paper will be part of the experience.
Emphasis will be on creative imagery and inspirational marks from the
Chateau. The instruction will include painting and printing with plant
dye extracts, making ochre and prismacolor rubbings on cloth from
fragments of the local landscape, cloth erosion, applying gold leaf to
cloth, creating collages with found bits from the Parisian flea markets
and facilitating your personal creative vision.
Tour Details:
This one-week workshop is combined with an introductory three-day
tour of Paris. All participants will arrive in Paris individually and
meet at the designated hotel by the evening of July 28. During our
stay in Paris we will explore flea markets to gather unique historical
finds, old lace and odd bits of stuff, and visit specialty ateliers and
museums for inspiration.
We will travel to the Chateau together the evening of July 31. The
workshop at the Chateau will commence August 1 and continue through
August 8. Midway through the workshop experience we will take an
excursion to an exquisite nearby village for a picnic, antique shopping
and site seeing.
The evening before your departure we will celebrate our creative
time together with a memorable farewell dinner as only the French can
create. Participants will leave for the airport the morning of August
9.
