The Château
The oldest part of the château, the 12th century medieval tower
with its distinctive spiral staircase, was built on the site of an old
Roman fortification. It was enlarged substantially during the
Renaissance, and again in the mid-nineteenth century by the Count du
Beauchamp who incorporated the styles of the earlier eras into a
harmonious whole. In the 20th century an annex was added at the
rear of the château during its incarnation as a Benedictine
monastery.
The Estate
Graced with hundreds of trees, including mature sequoias, giant
oaks and a beautiful double alley of sycamores, Château de St.
Julien l’Ars, sits among 56 acres of gardens, fields and wooded walking
paths. Fruit orchards and a large kitchen garden provide seasonal
produce, from wild strawberries in the early summer to apples and
walnuts in the fall.
On the Grounds
You can explore a huge barn filled with 19th century wine making
equipment as well as the remains of an ancient graveyard with 6th
century Morovingian sarcophagi. You will also find underground tunnels
which were originally a medieval refuge and later used as wine caves.
